An online study of the social-media stratosphere has confirmed what most presumed: Every jab Tom Brady delivers on Twitter is offset by a nasty flurry thrown his way.
A study conducted by Pickswise — a sports-betting site — indicates Brady has received 28,151 abusive tweets in the last 12 months, making him the third-most trolled sports celebrity during that span.
The only two athletes ahead of the 43-year-old Bucs quarterback: LeBron James (122,568 abusive tweets) and Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford (32,328). Brady is the only white athlete in the top five, which also features Kevin Durant at No. 4 (24,370) and NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace at No. 5 (21,750).
James also received the most LGBT-phobic abuse (1,628 tweets), with Brady ranking 10th in that area (346).
The data was collected directly from Twitter from the past 12 months (June 2020 to June 2021). Messages containing words, phrases and hashtags that were known abusive terms were logged against each player and the respective sport in which they participate, according to Pickswise.
The tweets of athletes in football, basketball, soccer, tennis, golf and hockey were analyzed. No other athlete from a Tampa Bay franchise made the top 20.
While the past indiscretion of Deflate-gate always will make Brady an easy target to those resentful of his unprecedented success, his departure from New England last spring after 20 seasons also put him in the Twitter crosshairs of many Patriots fans.
