Harvick breaks own track record to win Kansas pole

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kevin Harvick shattered his own Kansas Speedway track record on Friday to win the pole for Sunday's Hollywood Casino 400 race. His 197.621 mph lap broke his own record set in the spring by nearly 3 mph.

Brian Vickers qualified second at 196.307 mph around the 11/2-mile track. Aric Almirola of Tampa was third. Joey Logano began a run of five Sprint Cup Chase for the Championship contenders by qualifying fourth, then Jeff Gordon, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Sunday's race starts the second round of the Chase. Jimmie Johnson spun in his first qualifying effort and will start 32nd, the lowest he has started a Chase race since 2005.

NATIONWIDE: Regan Smith agreed to a one-year extension with JR Motorsports to continue in NASCAR's second-tier series. Smith, who is second in points behind Chase Elliott, said staying with Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s team was worth putting off attempting Sprint Cup.

NHRA: Doug Kalitta led Top Fuel qualifying at the NHRA Nationals at Mohnton, Pa., with a 3.747-second pass at 326.95 mph. Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car), Erica Enders-Stevens (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also lead their classes.
