NEW YORK — Yankees closer David Robertson is headed to the disabled list because of a strained groin just three appearances into his role as Mariano Rivera's replacement.

Robertson felt discomfort Sunday five or six pitches into the ninth inning of a 6-4 win over the Blue Jays, his second save in three outings.

"It's really disappointing," Robertson said Monday after New York beat Baltimore 4-2 in its home opener. "I would've loved to have been out there pitching the ninth (Monday), especially on opening day here."

Robertson had an MRI exam that revealed a Grade 1 strain, and setup man Shawn Kelley took over as closer.

Robertson doesn't expect his absence to last more than the required 15 days.

"Anytime I sit for a handful of days I feel good as gold," Robertson said. "I think it will be rest a little while, play catch and get a bullpen and get right back in there."

Also, 1B Mark Teixeira had an MRI exam that confirmed he had a Grade 1 right hamstring strain. Placed on the DL Saturday, Teixeira thinks he will need only the minimum time out.

And the Yankees traded INF Eduardo Nunez to the Twins for LHP Miguel Sulbaran.

JOBE HONORED: Dr. Frank Jobe, who pioneered the elbow procedure that became known as Tommy John surgery and saved the careers of countless pitchers, was remembered as a gifted and caring surgeon with a sense of humor. Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully presided over an hour-long service at Dodger Stadium that ended with cups of vanilla ice cream, a favorite of Jobe's, being handed out. Jobe died last month at 88.

PITCHER INVESTIGATED: Tigers RHP Evan Reed is facing a complaint of sexual assault. Detroit police Sgt. Michael Woody said the alleged victim is being interviewed. He did not know when the alleged assault happened. David Gorcyca, Reed's attorney, said he was confident Reed will be exonerated.

RANGERS: LHP Joe Saunders went on the disabled list with a bruised left ankle three days after being struck by Rays 3B Evan Longoria's comebacker.

REDS: C Devin Mesoraco, who began the year on the 15-day disabled list because of an injured side, was activated.

RED SOX: INF Ryan Roberts, a reserve for the Rays last season, agreed to a contract to help provide depth after a calf injury to 3B Will Middlebrooks.

ROCKIES: LH reliever Boone Logan was activated from the 15-day disabled list. OF Corey Dickerson was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

ROYALS: LH relievers Tim Collins and Francisley Bueno went on the 15-day disabled list, Collins with a flexor strain in his left elbow and Bueno with a sprained left little finger. RHP Michael Mariot and LHP Donnie Joseph were recalled from Triple-A Omaha.
