Marc Topkin's takeaways from Sunday's Rays-Orioles game

RHP Alex Cobb obviously did a few things wrong Sunday, a hit batter, an errant throw that scored a run and a three-run homer in the third inning alone. But he also did something very good: battle into the seventh, saving the bullpen from excessive duty.

The Rays have enough concern about C Jesus Sucre's right wrist after seeing X-rays that he's going for further imaging today, and a break would be a big blow. They'd likely turn to Curt Casali, hitting .281 at Triple A, though recently released Derek Norris is out there. Would they?

OF Mallex Smith has shown repeatedly how much of a catalyst he can be offensively with his speed and derring-do. But he came with a rep for needing to work on his defense, and that shows up at times, as it did Sunday, when his breaks and routes can prove to be costly.
