ARLINGTON, Texas — As much of a mess as LHP Drew Smyly left the Rays in by allowing five runs in only four innings Sunday, RHP Alex Colome kept them in the game against the Rangers and helped them limit the damage to the rest of the bullpen."He definitely saved us," manager Kevin Cash said. That they didn't end up winning was a product of the inefficiency of their offense, as they rapped 12 hits, the 13th time in 16 games they were in double digits, but scored only three runs in a 5-3 loss. Their worst moments were when they had two on and no outs in the fifth but didn't put the ball in play as Asdrubal Cabrera and Desmond Jennings struck out, and in the sixth when they had Kevin Kiermaier on second with no outs but Curt Casali and Brandon Guyer struck out and Richie Shaffer popped out."We're getting the guys on base; now we need to get that finish hit," Cash said.Colome kept them close, working three scoreless innings while allowing only two hits. Cash and pitching coach Jim Hickey praised the adjustments he has made in moving to the bullpen, limiting his repertoire and throwing more aggressively and with more conviction."I think we're starting to see Alex Colome really take to that bullpen role," Cash said. "The way he's handled using his pitches and factoring what counts to use them, he's doing a really nice job in that role." DOMINGUEZ DFA'D: Smyly's reinstatement from the 60-day DL required adjustments. To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Jose Dominguez was designated for assignment, giving the Rays 10 days to trade or release him, or pass him through waivers. The hard-throwing 25-year-old was acquired in December from the Dodgers, along with minor-league RHP Greg Harris , for RHP Joel Peralta and LHP Adam Liberatore . He pitched four times during an April stint with the Rays (1-0, 0.00) but spent most of his time at Triple-A Durham (0-2, 6.26) and was not always healthy."He's a guy that maybe hasn't shown the consistency that we're looking for," Cash said. The Rays late Saturday optioned RHP Kirby Yates to Durham to make room for Smyly on the 25-man active roster. Doing so left them in the unusual configuration of having only six relievers — having carried eight at some times this season — and five position players on the bench.Cash acknowledged it was "not the most ideal situation" and said it could change if they need an extra bullpen arm, but they were okay for tonight against the Astros. HEY, BUDDY: There was some confusion in the bottom of the sixth when Guyer, after pinch-hitting for DH John Jaso , ran out to play rightfield, then ran back in as Shaffer, who pinch-hit for RF Grady Sizemore , got out there since he was told to take over.Guyer said he just assumed he would be in the field and didn't think it through that the Rays would lose the DH if he did. "Just a little mixup," Guyer said. "I saw Richie running out, and I was like, 'What the heck is going on?' And that's when I realized."Shaffer, using Mikie Mahtook 's glove, said he is getting more comfortable in the outfield, having made cameo appearances the past two games. HIS BAD: 3B Evan Longoria said he made a "mental mistake" Saturday in getting picked off first base to kill a seventh-inning rally against the Rangers, walking toward second after thinking James Loney swung at strike three rather than two: "Not my brightest moment on the bases." MISCELLANY: Kiermaier said his right knee was sore from the ball he fouled off it but he was "just fine." … Texas GM Jon Daniels , who considered hiring Cash to manage the Rangers before picking Jeff Banister , visited postgame. … OF Jennings was in the lineup for a third straight day since coming off a 3½-month DL stint due to a left knee injury and was expected to play again tonight. … After catching eight innings in the mid 90-degree heat, catcher Casali drank four bottles of water.
