Given Joe Maddon's unexpected departure, the Rays will need some time to come up with a list of candidates to replace him. Here are a few names you can expect to hear:

Dave Martinez

Current Rays bench coach, has interviewed for five other manager jobs, well-liked in clubhouse. Would maintain continuity.

Gabe Kapler

Former Rays player and part-time consultant, currently doing TV for Fox Sports. Bright, analytical, outside-the-box hire Rays are known for.

Tim Bogar

One-time Rays coach has minor- and (interim) major-league experience as a manager. Was finalist to keep Texas job full time.

Joe McEwing

Has minor-league managing and big-league coaching experience, presently with White Sox. Interviewed in Arizona, Texas, Minnesota.

Marc Topkin, Times staff writer

Charlie Montoyo

Has had tremendous success managing Rays Triple-A Durham team, familiar with system and personnel. Lack of big-league time an issue.
