Bears' top pick White out injured

Published Aug. 16, 2015

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — One day after injured Bears wide receiver Kevin White started running on grass for the first time at training camp, he felt pain and knew he faced a worst-case scenario.

White will have surgery on his left shin to repair a stress fracture and will start the regular season on the physically unable to perform list after rest and therapy failed to cure shin pain he first had in June.

"I mostly just tried to let it heal on its own," White said Saturday. "Surgery is not a No. 1 option for anyone, so it was obviously the last option, and we're at a last option."

White, drafted seventh overall this year, will have a rod put in the tibia. He could miss the season, but the Bears hope he can return and they can use his roster spot for another player until Week 11 without activating him or putting him on injured reserve.

preseason games: Brian Hoyer, competing with Ryan Mallett for the starting job, threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Cecil Shorts III on Houston's first drive in a 23-10 victory over the visiting 49ers.

Cowboys: Darren McFadden made his team debut after sitting out with a hamstring injury. The former Raiders first-round draft pick is competing with Joseph Randle for the starting running back spot vacated by 2014 NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray.

Giants: Rookie safety Mykkele Thompson (Achilles tendon) is out for the season, and projected starter Landon Collins (sprained knee) will miss at least a week. Both were hurt in Friday's 23-10 loss at Cincinnati.

Jaguars: Safety Johnathan Cyprien (broken right finger) and tight end Julius Thomas (broken right hand) are likely out for the preseason.

Jets: Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, out most of camp with a strained left hamstring, had a minor setback and is day to day.

Vikings: Right tackle Phil Loadholt left after the first drive against the Bucs and was diagnosed with a season-ending torn Achilles tendon.
