The Jameis Winston debate officially has crossed into the absurd.
The Bucs quarterback on Monday allowed a golf ball to be hit off his head.
Yes, but ... he was wearing a helmet.
Winston, wearing what appears to be a bicycle helmet, sat cross-legged as trick-shot artist Trevor Consavage drove a ball off a tee attached to the top of the helmet during the 19th Annual Derrick Brooks Celebrity Golf Classic at Old Memorial Golf Course, TMZ reported.
By all indications, Consavage hit nothing but the ball, and Winston was perfectly fine afterward.
Yes, we know Winston is a risk-taker.
But ... was the risk necessary?
Remember, the Bucs have gone all-in on Winston this season, allowing Ryan Fitzpatrick to leave for the Dolphins and opting not to take a quarterback in the draft.
So, if something had happened to Winston, the Bucs’ starting quarterback would be ... journeyman Blaine Gabbert. Or Ryan Griffin, who has yet to take a snap in a regular-season game.
The stunt also came four days after defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul’s availability for the season was called into question when he suffered a neck injury during a car accident Thursday in Broward County, showing how quickly plans can change.
Reaction to the stunt ranged from it being no big deal or further proof that Winston is the worst decision-maker in the NFL.
