DESTIN — Although Bucs first-round pick Devin White has the size, speed and production to be a top-end linebacker in the NFL, none of those attributes were the most important to his college coach.

The most impressive things about the Bucs’ No. 5 overall pick, LSU coach Ed Orgeron said, were his intangibles.

“His leadership,” Orgeron said Wednesday during the SEC’s spring meetings at the Hilton Sandestin. “His character. Who he is. He never wavered off of that. Every day, man.”

That includes his final days with the Tigers, as LSU prepared to play UCF in the Fiesta Bowl. While some teammates (including cornerback Greedy Williams) skipped the game to get ready for the NFL draft, White stayed.

“Didn’t even think about not playing,” Orgeron said. “Played hard in every game, practiced hard. He’s a great young man.”
