TAMPA — Bucs starting quarterback Jameis Winston left Sunday’s game with a right hand injury, the Bucs announced. Winston missed the Bucs’ first series of the second half but returned with the Bucs’ trailing 35-21 midway through the third quarter.
Longtime backup Ryan Griffin, his seventh season on the roster, replaced Winston on the Bucs’ first offensive drive of the second half. It is first regular-season action.
Winston’s exit occurred following a crazy first half in which he threw two interceptions that led to a pair of Colts touchdowns, including his fifth pick-six of the season
Winston’s two first-half interceptions extended his league lead to 22. His 277 first-half passing yards are his most in one half in his five NFL seasons.
Winston came out to warm up before halftime, but then left the field. As Griffin led the Bucs on his first drive, Winston was throwing on the sideline.
The Bucs have already lost top receiver Mike Evans for the game due to a right hamstring injury.
