TAMPA ― Shaquil Barrett never thought about playing anywhere else except Tampa Bay.
After winning Super Bowl 55 and recording 27.5 sacks over the last two seasons, the outside linebacker said he was committed to returning to the Bucs on a long-term deal.
“It pretty much was Tampa, Tampa and Tampa,” Barrett told the Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday. “I was giving Tampa every opportunity to keep me here and make it work, and it worked out perfectly. I really didn’t want to have to leave and go anywhere else, to be honest. That’s why I said it from the jump that Tampa was my Plan A, and I’m happy I didn’t have to get to Plan B.
“I did not get another offer that was better than Tampa. ... I’m back here now, and I’m happy to keep building on what we’ve got going right now.”
Barrett has a lot going on in his personal life. After agreeing to a four-year, $72 million contract with $34.5 million guaranteed, he and his wife, Jordanna, were house-shopping in Tampa Tuesday. They are expecting a baby girl in a month.
The Barretts have been renting a home in Tampa the past two years.
“Yeah, we most definitely have to move, because we’ve been renting the one we’re in now and since we’re going to be here for a few years, we’re going to buy,” Barrett said. “There’s a couple houses that we’re looking at today that we’re going to choose from. So I have my home in Colorado already, but I do have to buy a home down here.
“We’re having a baby coming up next month. We can’t do too much. But we’ve been kicking it around in Florida, we went down to a little resort in Orlando or Kissimmee and we’re going down to Legoland this weekend, but I think that’s going to be the last thing we’re going to do since the baby is going to be on her way.”
Barrett said that aside from a new house, he plans to buy a new vehicle for himself and his wife.
“I have my car that I want already. I’m probably going to get myself another Tesla, a Tesla Roadster, and get my wife a nice car as a little gift as well,” he said.
Barrett acknowledged Tom Brady and the chance to win another Super Bowl was a big factor in his decision to remain with the Bucs.
He was asked if he had ever seen Brady the way he was after the Super Bowl boat parade.
“No,” Barrett said. “I had a couple drinks, but no avocado tequila. That’s probably what it was.
“No, I’m not used to him (like that). But I’m going to get used to seeing him like that, because we’ve got a lot more to accomplish here.”
