TAMPA ― Shortly after losing cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting to a dislocated elbow in the season opener, the Bucs reached out to five-time Pro Bowler Richard Sherman.

The former Seahawk and 49er was arrested in July after he tried to force his way into a family member’s home after crashing his SUV in a construction zone. He pleaded not guilty to five misdemeanor charges, including driving under the influence and second-degree criminal trespass, and has been speaking to a therapist since the arrest, NFL Network reported.

A first DUI offense results in a three-game suspension, according to a provision in the NFL’s substance abuse policy added in 2020. But those sanctions wouldn’t apply until Sherman’s case is adjudicated.

Sherman, 33, reportedly is back down to his playing weight of 195 pounds. The Seahawks and 49ers have maintained contact with Sherman, who serves as his own agent. He expressed interest in signing with the Seahawks, 49ers or Saints before his arrest, but money has been an issue.

Bucs coach Bruce Arians said last week that Murphy-Bunting’s injury is not season-ending, but he could miss 4-6 weeks.
