In the wake of Leonard Fournette’s release, the Bucs have bolstered their tailback depth by signing dual threat Chase Edmonds to a one-year deal.
Edmonds, 26, receives the veteran minimum of $1.08 million. A 5,800-yard rusher at Fordham, he has played for three NFL teams, splitting last season between Denver and Miami.
Projected as a backup to second-year speedster Rachaad White, Edmonds has rushed for 1,796 yards (4.5 yards per carry) and has totaled 1,078 receiving yards (on 144 catches) in five NFL seasons. Though limited to 12 special-teams snaps the last two years, he played extensively as a special-teamer (390 snaps) in 2018 and 2019 with the Cardinals.
He joins a running back room expected to feature White, fourth-year reserve Ke’Shawn Vaughn and perhaps a draft choice. Veteran Giovani Bernard, a versatile backup who logged extensive special-teams duty the last two seasons, isn’t expected to be re-signed.
