Presuming he doesn’t fill his final coaching vacancy with Bobby Bowden or some other nonagenarian, USF’s Jeff Scott likely will possess the American Athletic Conference’s youngest staff in 2020.
It also might ― just might ― rank as the youngest Bulls staff ever assembled.
With nine assistants already hired, the average age of Scott’s staff ― including the 39-year-old himself ― is 36.4 years. That’s barely older than SMU (36.1), which is seeking a new offensive coordinator, and Tulsa (38.4).
Memphis’ staff ― under new 39-year-old coach Ryan Silverfield ― still has a handful of vacancies, but five of the six coaches currently still on board are over 40.
Scott, who turned 39 on Dec. 28, will enter the 2020 season as the AAC’s youngest head coach, nearly five months younger than Silverfield. He’ll also possess the league’s youngest offensive coordinator by far in 26-year-old Charlie Weis Jr., believed to be the youngest OC in modern Division I-A history when he assumed that role at FAU in 2018.
Weis is one of two Bulls assistants younger than 30. Only SMU has more sub-30 assistants (three). Veteran defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer, 55, currently is the only Bulls assistant over 50.
For comparison, the average age of Charlie Strong’s final Bulls staff was 43.8 years entering the first game of 2019. Willie Taggart’s first staff had an average age of just under 40 (39.7) entering the 2013 opener.
Skip Holtz’s first staff, in 2010, averaged 46.6 years. The first staff in program history averaged 36.1 years entering the Bulls’ inaugural ’97 contest.
