The USF women’s basketball team has gone nearly a month without playing an opponent, their latest cancellation coming against rival UCF.
The game, scheduled for Sunday, was postponed “due to COVID-19-related issues,” according to a news release from the athletic department. No decision has been made regarding a rescheduled date.
It’s the fifth straight postponement for the No. 14 Bulls (10-1).
USF coach Jose Fernandez said late last month it wasn’t ideal to be ranked and idle for as long as his team has been. USF hasn’t played since beating Tulane on Jan. 13, and the team hasn’t practiced since Jan. 21.
“We went from going 100 mph to zero — just like that,” Fernandez said at the time. “Before this season, you could never imagine something like this.”
USF, which is on a nine-game win streak, doesn’t have another game scheduled until Feb. 13 against Tulsa at the Yuengling Center on the USF campus in Tampa. As the schedule currently sits, five games remain before the start of the American Athletic Conference championship tournament that begins March 8 in Fort Worth, Texas.
