USF and the Gators will face each other in men’s basketball this season at the Orange Bowl Classic.

They’re scheduled to meet on Dec. 18 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. It will be their first meeting in 19 years, since UF swept a series in 2001-02. The teams played every year from 1981-96, and the Gators have won 18 of the previous 23 meetings

The other game of the Orange Bowl Classic’s doubleheader is also noteworthy: Florida State will play UCF.

It’s the first time in the event’s 27-year history that all four teams are from the state, eliciting memories of the old “Florida Four” tournament of the early 1980s that featured Florida, FSU, USF and Jacksonville. That event, a true two-day tournament, was held in Tampa in 1981 and Gainesville the following year.

TV and game time information have not yet been announced. Tickets are available through the Orange Bowl at (305) 341-4701 or tickets@orangebowl.org.
