USF men go cold from field, lose to Eastern Michigan

TAMPA — Flustered by Eastern Michigan's ranginess and matchup-zone defense, USF managed only six second-half field goals in a 65-47 loss Sunday before an announced Sun Dome crowd of 2,050.

The Bulls (4-3), playing their third game in five days, were seeking the program's first three-game winning streak since November 2014.

USF finished 6-of-25 from the floor in the second half and 14-of-48 (29.2 percent) for the game. It had one field goal in the final 7:10 of the first half and went more than eight minutes without a point during a second-half drought.

Senior graduate transfer Payton Banks led the Bulls with 10 points.

NO. 4 MICH. ST. 63, NO. 9 UNC 45: Joshua Lanford made five 3-pointers and scored 23 for the Spartans (5-1), who held the Tar Heels (5-1) to 24.6 percent shooting and won the Victory Bracket of the PK80 Invitational in Portland, Ore.

NO. 8 KENTUCKY 107, ILL.-CHICAGO 73: Kevin Knox scored a career-high 25 as the host Wildcats (6-1) concluded play in the Adolph Rupp Classic. Kentucky coach John Calipari earned his 700th career victory.

Women: USF bounces back

ESTERO — Maria Jespersen scored 25 and No. 17 USF (6-1) beat St. John's 68-59 in the third-place game at the Gulf Coast Showcase. The Bulls shot 48 percent from 3-point range to recover from Saturday's loss to Notre Dame.

NO. 13 FSU 87, SAMFORD 62: Shakayla Thomas scored 29 and Ama Degbeon had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the host Seminoles (6-0).

NO. 6 N. DAME 92, NO. 3 S.C. 85: Arike Ogunbowale scored 23, Jackie Young added 22 and the Irish (6-0) won the Gulf Coast Showcase championship and snapped a 17-game winning streak by the defending national champion Gamecocks (6-1).
