USF women blank FGCU, Gators next in NCAA soccer

TAMPA — The USF women defeated Florida Gulf Coast 3-0 Saturday in a first-round NCAA tournament soccer game at Corbett Stadium.

The Bulls (13-3-2) face Florida this Friday. The time and location are to be determined. The Gators (15-6) beat South Alabama 3-1 Friday. Florida State (12-6-1) advanced with a 5-0 victory over Ole Miss on Friday and plays Arizona this Friday (time, location TBA).

USF freshman Sabrina Wagner of Mitchell High helped set up the first goal 18 minutes in. She passed to Evelyne Viens at the top of the box, and Viens scored into the lower-right corner.

"I didn't want it to end this weekend,'' coach Denise Schilte-Brown said. "I am really excited that it didn't, and I don't think we are going to be done Friday.

ACCUSED PLAYERS stay IN CHINA: The UCLA men's team returned to Los Angeles without three players arrested on shoplifting charges in China, according to reports. Freshmen LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill and Cody Riley were to remain in Hangzhou, China. Ball is the brother of Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball. No. 21 UCLA beat Georgia Tech 63-60 in Shanghai on Saturday. ESPN reported the players could be in Hangzhou for 1-2 weeks while the situation is resolved.

NO. 1 DUKE 99, UTAH VALLEY 69: Mike Krzyzewski became the first men's Division I coach to win 1,000 games at one school when the host Blue Devils (2-0) rolled behind 24 points and 10 rebounds from freshman Marvin Bagley. Freshmen scored Duke's first 40 points. Krzyzewski is 1,073-330 in a 43-year career that includes a half-decade at Army.

FGCU 98, ILLINOIS ST. 87: Zach Johnson scored a career-high 27, Brandon Goodwin added 21, and the host Eagles won the season opener for both teams.

WOMEN: Dyandria Anderson and Haley Lorenzen each scored 18 as host Florida opened with an 82-66 victory over Georgia State in coach Cameron Newbauer's debut. … Jessica Shepard had 18 points and 11 rebounds as No. 6 Notre Dame opened with a 121-65 win over visiting Mount St. Mary's.
