State fodder: Pick-happy Gators, improved Knights and more

Knights showing life

LT Aaron Evans (Armwood High/Seffner Christian) is helping UCF rebound from last year's winless season. Thanks to an improved offensive line, the Knights' rushing attack has picked up with 472 yards through the first two games. More could be coming today against a Maryland defense that gave up 202 last week to Florida International.

No. 23 Florida recorded three interceptions against Kentucky and should have chances for more against a North Texas team that threw the ball 83 times over the first two games. Since 2008, UF ranks fifth nationally in interceptions:

Boise State: 154

Ohio State: 145

Houston: 142

Oregon: 140

Florida: 139

Heisman history

One of the few loose ties between Florida and North Texas comes from the 2008 Heisman Trophy race. Here's how that voting went, and where those players are now:

1. Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford: On his third NFL team since being the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2010

2. Texas QB Colt McCoy: Has started 25 NFL games across three rosters, now Washington's backup

3. Florida QB Tim Tebow: Out of the NFL after 16 starts, now an SEC Network analyst and recently signed New York Mets minor leaguer

4. Texas Tech QB Graham Harrell: Won a Super Bowl ring as a backup with the Packers, now the first-year offensive coordinator at North Texas

Mountaineers-Miami matchup

Appalachian State's strength is a run game led by Marcus Cox, who ranks 10th nationally with 248 yards. "He's got some crazy numbers," Miami coach Mark Richt said. But the No. 25 Hurricanes have a crazy-good run defense (so far); it leads the nation in rushing defense (34.5 yards per game). Look for QB Brad Kaaya to have a bounce-back game for UM against a Mountaineers secondary that looked shaky against Tennessee.

By the numbers

7 Consecutive road losses against current Power Five teams for USF, which can snap the streak at Syracuse
