Deposed Angels GM joins Bosox

MIAMI — Former Angels GM Jerry Dipoto was hired by the Red Sox in a short-term consulting role.

Dipoto will assist GM Ben Cherington and the baseball operations department in evaluating talent and assisting with offseason plans, the team said. Boston fell to an AL-worst 50-64 with Wednesday's loss in Miami.

Larry Lucchino recently announced he will step down as Boston's president and CEO at the end of this season.

Also, Red Sox LF Hanley Ramirez will be examined today to determine whether further tests are needed on his sore left foot.

GIANTS: RHP Tim Hudson, out since July 27 with a shoulder strain, could make a rehab appearance with Triple-A Sacramento on Friday.

NATIONALS: RF Bryce Harper was in the lineup a day after being scratched with left knee soreness.

PADRES: RH setup man Brandon Maurer went on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder inflammation.
