We've reached the point of the college football offseason where we've progressed from too-early top 25 rankings to too-early analytical projections.
Thanks, ESPN.
ESPN wrote a little about its 2018 FPI (football power index) numbers, which you can see here. The noteworthy nuggets:
The Florida team most likely to win a conference title is … UCF. ESPN gives the Knights a 31.2 percent chance of winning the AAC. Memphis (40.9 percent) is the favorite, and USF is fourth (9.0).
Among the Power Five teams, Miami has a 15.7 percent chance of winning the ACC — well behind No. 1 team Clemson (68.5) but ahead of rival Florida State (4.5). ESPN ranks Miami No. 14 overall and the Seminoles 18th.
The Gators have the fourth-best shot to win the SEC (3.4 percent), but that's wayyyyy behind Georgia, Alabama and Auburn. It's also barely ahead of coach Dan Mullen's former team, Mississippi State (3.1). UF is No. 21 in ESPN's overall FPI rankings.
