Former Florida Gators coach Jim McElwain is a "strong candidate" to become the next head coach at Central Michigan, according to a report from Football Scoop.

The Chippewas, according to Football Scoop, are looking for a big-name hire. McElwain would qualify. He led UF to back-to-back SEC East titles in his first two seasons before flaming out in Year 3. He finished 22-12 with the Gators.

Before that, he was the head coach at Colorado State and an assistant at Alabama under Nick Saban.

McElwain also has ties to Michigan. He coaches receivers for the Wolverines (a potential UF opponent in a New Year's Six bowl), and he was an assistant at Michigan State from 2003-05.
