Make way for the head ball chef. Well, sort of.
University of Florida resident icon Steve Spurrier formally announced Monday he’s opening a casual-American-dining restaurant ― Spurrier’s ― in Gainesville’s Celebration Pointe, and is seeking an “experienced teammate” to operate it.
The restaurant, set to feature a rooftop lounge, will include a 1,500-square-foot sports memorabilia exhibit with Spurrier’s 1966 Heisman Trophy as the centerpiece. The plan is to open the venue before the 2020 football season.
The announcement immediately got us to contemplating the menu. Imagine the possibilities. We certainly have.
Here are some items we believe would sell like snow cones in the Sahara.
The Cryin’ Dawg
This grilled foot-long frank is named in honor of Georgia fans who endured 11 losses to UF in Spurrier’s 12 seasons. It’s topped with onions ― lots of onions.
The signature item on the craft-beer menu. A pint of this, and you’ll be seeing double.
This, That and the Other
Listen to any Spurrier press conference, and you’re likely to hear him drop this five-word phrase. It’s the perfect name for one of those fried sampler plates featuring mozarella, mushrooms, etc.
Spurrier puts his own spin on this popular Chick-fil-A item. These babies go great with a Cryin' Dawg.
The absolute perfect dish for a Spurrier eatery, mainly because it’s produced by the state tree of both Florida and South Carolina (sabal palmetto), and it’s somewhat controversial. The heart of the palmetto can be cut up and boiled (or sauteed with bacon or pork) to make an excellent Southern side dish. Beware: Once the heart is taken, the tree dies (we told you it was controversial).
Blue Slide Steamers
Named after a Spurrier play, this heaping serving of steamed clams pairs perfectly with a pint of Two-Headed QB.
In honor of Spurrier’s highly successful three-year coaching tenures with the Tampa Bay Bandits (1983-85) and Duke Blue Devils (1987-89), the menu features this Tampa-born dish.
