TAMPA — In the opening moments, Gaither looked ready to go when running back Copeland Hargrove ran back the opening kickoff 38 yards and had two big runs before teammate TJ Williams capped a six-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. But that was the only touchdown in a 10-0 win over Tampa Catholic, as the penalties and fumbles plagued both offenses. "It was ugly," Gaither coach Jason Stokes said. "I'll chalk it up to the first game, just getting your feet wet and getting the jitters out." Key drive: Hargrove's kickoff return put the Cowboys on Tampa Catholic's 38-yard line to start the game. Hargrove then had two runs — 7 yards and 24 yards — to set up Williams' touchdown. Stat of the game: The teams combined for 23 penalties, 12 for Gaither. The teams also combined for 12 fumbles, including one on the last play of the game by Crusader quarterback Austin Sessums. Gaither kicker Carey Ledee had a 30-yard field goal in the third quarter after the Cowboys recovered a fumble at Tampa Catholic's 1-yard line. Final word: "He's got some growing to do, but there were some simple mistakes he made and he knows that." — Tampa Catholic coach Mike Gregory on Sessums' debut. Sessums transferred less than a month ago to replace Kevin Knox, who is going to focus on basketball.
