Football: Indian Rocks 34, Orlando Christian 12

Published Sep. 24, 2016

LARGO — Indian Rocks Christian established its rushing attack early and dominated the line of scrimmage all night long on its way to a comfortable 34-12 win over non conference opponent Orlando Christian (2-2).

Key drive: Indian Rocks (2-3) controlled the first half, but only managed a nine-point lead. The second half was a different story as the defense shut out Orlando Christian's offense. The third quarter saw running back Bernard Mitchell explode up the gut for a huge chunk play for IRC, a 57-yard run to the 3-yard line. Zanta Shubert punched it into the end zone, giving the home team a 28-12 lead.

Stars of the game: Mitchell shined all night and if the game would have been closer he might have broken the school's single-game rushing record. The senior running back ran for 221 yards and three touchdowns with 18 carries for 144 yards in the first half and just two for 77 in the second.

Stats of the game: Indian Rocks outrushed Orlando Christian 302-77, which not only said something about the offensive line's effort, but the Golden Eagles' defensive front as well.

Final word: "Our goal was to establish the run game tonight and we executed. We needed to put some toughness back into our play and they really responded tonight." — IRC coach Mark Buchanan
