NAPLES — Lakewood made a few mistakes in its preseason game Friday, and one of the state's premier programs gladly took advantage. The Spartans had three fumbles and other offensive miscues as Naples beat Lakewood 41-0 in a kickoff classic.Senior quarterback Kieran DiGiorno threw for 101 yards and three scores, and rushed for 49 more yards to lead the Golden Eagles' victory.Already performing as if at midseason form, the Golden Eagle defense limited the Spartans to only 178 yards, most of which came when the game was out of hand.Tyler Byrd had two interceptions, one of which he returned for a score, and caught two touchdowns."We're not too disappointed tonight, because we looked at it as a ;data game,' " Lakewood coach Cory Moore said. "It gave us an idea of where we are, and what we need to work on. We are still pretty confident going into the year, yet we realize we have a lot to prepare for."Adrian James was the Spartans' main offensive star with 85 yards receiving."It was a privilege to play a tough opponent like this," Moore said. "We think that everything's going to happen this season for us. The way we prepared for this game will give us an idea of how to approach the rest of the games."The Golden Eagles won mostly because of an awesome second quarter of 34 points."We had some turnovers late, and that frustrated me a little," Naples coach Bill Kramer said. "With some backups in, we made some mistakes. So we have to clean up some mental mistakes."Naples got a few good breaks early, turning a fumble recovery and one of the Spartans' bad snaps into its first two scores.Late in the first quarter, a snap on fourth down sailed way over Jaylen Shazell's head, giving the Golden Eagles possession at Lakewood's 30.The Golden Eagles then got on the board late in the first quarter when quarterback Kieran DiGiornio sneaked the ball across from 2 yards out. Time expired on the play, so Naples led 7-0 heading into the second frame. In the second, another fumble by the Spartans gave Naples the ball at their own 46. The Golden Eagles promptly drove downfield and scored again when DiGiorno hit Wooby Theork for a 21-yard touchdown pass, making it a 14-0 game with 9:42 left in the second. The Golden Eagles scored twice more on DiGiorno's 21-yard pass to Tyler Byrd and a 4-yard run by Antonio Carbonaro.Carbonaro's run was set up by Fils-Aime's 31-yard run. With 3:04 left in the first half, the Golden Eagles led 27-0.But Naples wasn't done lighting up the scoreboard in the first half as a 49-yard bomb from DiGiorno to Byrd make it 34-0 with 1:10 remaining. Then Byrd intercepted Shazell and returned it 45 yards to put the Golden Eagles ahead 41-0. With both teams playing a lot of second and third-stringers, the second half was scoreless.
