SEMINOLE — St. Petersburg thumped Osceola on Friday night in the Warriors' home opener, 38-0. Quarterback Austyn Causey's 1-yard surge up the middle gave St. Petersburg (2-0) its first score late in the opening quarter. A few plays into Osceola's next drive, Anthony Johnson intercepted a pass at the 10. The Green Devils drove 90 yards, 45 of them coming on two Causey connections to Matt Landers, who hauled in a 25-yard pass to put St. Petersburg up 14-0.The Green Devils then recovered their kickoff, setting up the offense at the Warriors 44. They drove inside the 10 but two Green Devils fumbled on the same play; Osceola (0-2) recovered but was pinned at its own 1. St. Petersburg's defense scored on Osceola's first play, a run to the right, by tackling running back Mark Cioffi for a safety.The next two drives saw both teams fumble before Jalynn Williams returned a punt 50 yards to give the Green Devils a 23-0 lead at the half.Though its miscues didn't lead to Osceola points, St. Petersburg's turnovers were addressed during the intermission, and the Green Devils responded by holding on to the ball in the third and fourth quarters."We made too many mistakes in the first half," St. Petersburg coach Joe Fabrizio said. "We stressed all week the need to play cleaner than we did last week. The coaches did a really good job at halftime explaining the need to hold onto the ball."St. Petersburg held Osceola to just 5 yards of offense over its first two drives of the second half. The Green Devils scored twice to put a running clock in effect. Causey hit Landers for a 60-yard score, and Donnie Crum ran 16 yards into the end zone with 3:20 left in the third quarter. A two-point pass from Causey to Adul Yates accounted for the final score.
