Trevor Hawks, River Ridge

Last season, Hawks' job was simple. The River Ridge quarterback wheeled around and handed the ball off to Chris Schwarz.

Schwarz had the bulk of the offensive workload, rushing for more than 2,000 yards for a second straight season and becoming Pasco County's all-time leading rusher.

"What can you say, Chris was the man," Hawks said.

Hawks made the most of his limited opportunities with 12 of his 29 completions last year going for touchdowns.

Once Schwarz graduated, the Royal Knights still had Hawks. The senior quarterback now has a more prominent role. He has thrown for more than 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns while leading River Ridge to a third straight district title.

Last week, he had his best game, throwing for 312 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-28 win over Crystal River in the Class 5A region quarterfinals.

"That's the most yards we've ever had from a quarterback since I've been here," coach Ryan Benjamin said. "It might even be a school record. We're not known for throwing much."

Hawks knew had the chance to put up big numbers. He threw short passes and long ones. And he didn't stop. Hawks completed 24-of-34. The completion total doubled his previous best.

Despite constantly putting the ball in the air, Hawks said he didn't know how many yards he had until after the game.

"I knew it had to be a lot," he said. "But I didn't know until after the game when of our coaches mentioned it. I can say it was definitely my best game."

Breauna Dailey, Largo

Dailey, a junior, is still getting used to her surroundings. She grew up in Colorado and moved with her family to Largo in July. The reason for the move was simple: her parents were sick of the cold in Colorado and wanted to be close to a beach.

That meant Dailey had to make new friends and find a new club soccer team. A club player in Colorado, she ended up with the Clearwater Chargers.

As a high school player, she made her presence felt immediately. A center-midfielder, Dailey scored a combined five goals in wins over Dunedin and Bradenton Southeast last week.

"It's a little different here," Dailey said prior to Monday night's match against East Lake. "It was hard to make friends at first. But I think I've fit in with the team okay and I really like the school."

With the addition of Dailey, Largo looks to be one of the favorites in the huge, nine-team Class 3A, District 10. The Packers are already 2-0 in the district and 3-3 overall. While not as talented as some other north county teams, Largo does have a chance to go far in its classification.

Dailey said a big reason for the early success is chemistry.

"This is the kind of team where everyone gets along well," Dailey said. "We do things together both on and off the field. It's a fun team to play for."
