South Sumter 14, Pasco 6

BUSHNELL — The Pasco Pirates fought hard for 48 minutes against the top-ranked team in Class 5A, South Sumter, but came up short in a rainy game delayed for 30 minutes by lightning. The game was a key 5A, District 6 contest.

Key drives: The Pirates embarked on a six-play, 56-yard drive in the third quarter after Pasco kicker Brandon Ray got a first down on a fake punt run. The drive was capped by Grant Starling's 7-yard touchdown to Issac Johnson, but the Raiders' Devin Papenheim blocked the extra point. With South Sumter clinging to a one-point lead with 8:44 left, the Raiders wore down Pasco with their running attack on a nine-play, 54-yard drive, culminated by J.T. Taylor's 1-yard touchdown run with 3:58 left to make it 14-6.

Stars of the Game: Taylor rushed for 111 yards and scored both touchdowns from 1 yard out for the Raiders. Johnson caught the only touchdown pass and had five receptions for Pasco.

Final Word: "I'm proud of my team and how hard we played against the No. 1 team in the state. … We've got to continue to play hard and get some help. — Pirates coach Tom McHugh
