Hillsborough defensive back Ken Montgomery is a four-star recruit who is listed as one of the nation's top 300 players in the 2018 class. But the junior is known more around campus for his fashion accessories off the field than his lofty status on it. Montgomery wears sunglasses and Crocs. Red Crocs to be exact, matching the predominant color of the school. He does not just wear them. He lives in them. "This guy is too obsessed to the point that he wears his shades in the shower and he bought Jibbitz for his Crocs," Terriers defensive lineman Zachary Carter said of Montgomery. For those not familiar with Crocs lingo, Jibbitz are the decorative charms that snap onto the shoes. Yes, Montgomery wears charms. He sports quite a few on his Crocs, mostly of cartoon characters. There's Snoopy, Cookie Monster, Tom and Jerry and Dragon Tales charms. To stay true to his sport, there is a football charm, too. The Crocs do come off — at practice, in games and in the shower. The same cannot be said for the shades."It's true. I sometimes wear the shades in the shower," Montgomery said. "The coaches tell me to take the shades off when I'm playing, but I would definitely wear them if I could."Montgomery's fashion statement has caught on at school. "Lots of students do wear Crocs now," Carter said. "I wear my Crocs pretty much every day. Ken has a little squad with some of his girlfriends that wear Crocs, too."What about the sunglasses?"The shades are a little extra for me," Carter said.Montgomery will spend the next year whittling down his list of 19 college offers. The school colors won't matter. "I'll just get new Crocs and shades for whatever college I choose," he said.
