Willie Taggart will take more fourth-down chances than Jimbo Fisher. But how many more?

FSU went for on fourth down the fewest times in the country four times under Jimbo Fisher.

TAMPA — Florida State coach Willie Taggart fielded an interesting question near the end of his Q&A with fans during Sunday's booster stop at Armature Works.

Are the Seminoles going to be going for it more on fourth down?

"We will be going for it on fourth down," Taggart said, "so be ready."

Sorry, punter Logan Tyler.

On Twitter, @BullsNathanSBN posted some stats about Taggart's fourth-down history, which is worth exploring.

Expect the Seminoles to take more fourth-down chances than they did under Jimbo Fisher, but don't expect a revolution.

Although one of the biggest calls in his tenure was on fourth down (the fake punt against Auburn in the title game), Fisher rarely took risks like that. In eight seasons with Fisher as head coach, FSU went for it 57 times on fourth down. For comparison, Lane Kiffin went for it 39 times last year at FAU.

In those eight seasons, FSU had the fewest fourth-down attempts in the country four times. It ranked second-to-last in attempts another time and never finished higher than 110th.

Some of that is because the Seminoles were often ahead and didn't need to take chances. That wasn't the case last year during the 7-6 disappointment, but FSU still ranked No. 121 with 10 fourth-down attempts.

In eight years as a head coach, Taggart averages about 18 attempts on fourth down. His 17 attempts at Oregon last season ranked 87th in the country, but his teams at USF and Western Kentucky typically ranked around the middle of the pack nationally in attempts (average ranking over all eight seasons: 69.9).

It's worth noting, too, that Taggart's Bulls converted on 17 of their 19 attempts in 2016. That conversion rate (89 percent) led the country.

So Taggart takes more chances than Fisher (it'd be hard not to). But he's not on the other extreme, either — which is good news for Logan Tyler.
