ZEPHYRHILLS — Mitchell won its fourth straight Sunshine Athletic Conference boys golf tournament in record fashion, surpassing its previous best result by one stroke.
Among the Mustangs' seven SAC titles overall was the 2008 finish of plus-7. Wednesday at Silverado, they shot 294 to finish a team-record 6 under. Mitchell went 12-0 in the regular season.
"Every year I say this is the best one so far," Mitchell coach Rick Hyatt said. "I'm really proud of this year's (team), getting all five guys in the 70s."
Two of those guys — Donnie Gabrelcik and Anthony Swinford — have golfed on all four conference championship teams and played together at Fox Hollow since they were fifth-graders.
"Donnie and I have been really blessed," Swinford said. "We grew up playing together and it gives us that competitive edge."
Added Gabrelcik: "As you get older you start to become the leaders of the team and you contribute more."
The most significant contribution for Mitchell came from junior Mike Spinger, the individual medalist (71). Rounding out the top Mustangs were Nick Nuzzo and Anthony Salvati, who each finished with 78.
Runnerup River Ridge came in at 323 and Sunlake totaled 326 to finish third. The Royal Knights had two SAC first-teamers with Mike Stewart shooting 72 and Mike Dodson one stroke behind.
Joining Mitchell's Nuzzo and Salvati on the second team were Sunlake's Jake Roberts (74), Wesley Chapel's Tyler Rover (74) and Gulf's Ryan Gibson (77).
