Admiral Farragut's Linda Derk, who led the softball program from its infancy a decade ago to a state title last season, said she is stepping down as coach and athletic director.

"This is not an easy decision," Derk said Tuesday. "It's always tough to leave a place where you've built so many relationships. But sometimes you have to do what you have to do."

On Monday, school administrators told players about Derk's departure.

"She decided to pursue new opportunities," assistant principal Matt Olesnevich said in an email about Derk. "We are thankful for her service in both roles and wish her the best in future endeavors."

Derk was planning to say goodbye to the players and parents during a reception at the school later Tuesday.

Derk started the program from scratch. The transformation into a title contender was swift and remarkable. After winning just one game from 2011-12, the Blue Jackets have become a model of consistency.

Admiral Farragut has made five straight playoff appearances, including four straight trips to the region finals and a state semifinal berth in 2017.

The program's ascension culminated with its first state title last season.

Derk said she will continue to run her softball consulting and instruction business, LDI Sports, as she has done for the past 18 years. She will also help run the JUCO Classic in Clearwater from Jan. 26-28.

"I have some options out there," Derk said.

There is no timetable for hiring her replacement as softball coach. Whoever takes over will inherit a team that returns every player from last season.

"There's an old saying that you leave something better than you found it," Derk said. "I think I've done that here. The girls have all the tools in place to be successful no matter who takes over."
