Largo’s Jayion McCluster ended his recruitment early by committing to Florida State on Wednesday.The rising senior made the announcement live on Instagram. He picked the Seminoles over Auburn and Miami.Ranked as the nation’s 10th-best inside linebacker by 247Sports, McCluster is the first area recruit and the 10th overall in FSU’s 2020 class.The McCluster name was first made famous more than a decade ago by Jayion’s cousin, Dexter, the former Packers standout who ran for a then-Pinellas County record 2,490 yards and scored 39 touchdowns as a senior in 2005. Dexter went on to play at Ole Miss and currently is with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts.Growing up, Jayion idolized his famous relative and hoped to be the next star running back at Largo. Now, Jayion is making a name for himself on the other side of the ball as a linebacker.Jayion was a running back in youth leagues. He even spent time as an offensive lineman. In eighth grade, he started making the shift to defense, playing safety and linebacker. Now, he is not only the Packers’ top linebacker, but also one of the best in the nation.The four-star recruit had 129 tackles and seven tackles for loss as a junior last season. This spring, Jayion whittled his list of 19 offers down to a top three. Miami made a strong push for Jayion, trying to entice him with early playing time.
