Calvary Christian, Holy Names nab top seeds in region volleyball tournament

The Tampa Bay area will be well represented, although a few teams are left out under the new rankings system.

Volleyball region brackets were released Sunday afternoon. District tournament champions were already assured one of the top four seeds in their eight-team region. But unlike seasons past, a district runnerup was not guaranteed a spot under the Florida High School Athletic Association’s new rankings system.

Largo and Palm Harbor University were victims of the new system. The Packers (13-11) lost to St. Petersburg in the Class 6A, District 6 tournament final but did not get a region bid. PHU (13-13) beat district top seed Steinbrenner in the Class 7A, District 7 semifinals but did not advance while Steinbrenner and Wharton, which also lost in the semis, did. There were several other area teams that did not make a district final but still earned region berths.
