Boy, did Ryan Callahan need that second-period shorthanded goal. Callahan entered the game in the biggest scoring slump of his career with one goal in 38 games. But he made up for it in fantastic fashion, blowing past defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and beating goalie Michal Neuvirth with a highlight-reel move.
Coach Jon Cooper was right on when he said Brayden Point is often "the straw that stirs our drink." Point, added to the All-Star roster this week, got Tampa Bay going with his power-play goal in the opening minute of the second period. It clinched Point's first 20-goal season.
Yanni Gourde may end up in the top five in Calder Trophy (top rookie) voting. Gourde is quietly having an impressive season, with Thursday's workmanlike goal his 17th of the season. That's just one fewer than Steven Stamkos has. Think about that.
