TARPON SPRINGS — East Lake did its part, now it's up to the numbers.On Senior Night, the Eagles got back to basics, taking the starch out of Clearwater in all three phases of play en route to a convincing, playoff worthy 40-21 victory.After Friday's regular season finale, now it's up the FHSAA to calculate the ratings points to see if East Lake (5-5) slides up from 11th place in Class 7A into the top eight in the region and into a postseason berth.Drive of the game: East Lake PK Ian Woodward booted a 36-yard field goal with 51 seconds left in the first half to boost the Eagle lead to 19-7, but Jarius Williams' 36-yard kick return followed by a 44-yard strike from QB Colin Wray to sophomore Keedrik Murray got Class 6A Clearwater (6-4) to the East Lake 15 in position to score. That's when the wheels came off for the Tornadoes as they drew two penalties before Eagles LB James McDuffy sacked Wray twice to turn the ball over on downs back at the 46. Clearwater never got closer than that the rest of the night.Key plays: On a short third-down call from the Clearwater 25, East Lake senior RB David Lucas disappeared into a crowd of linemen for several seconds before emerging untackled, sprinting to the four. Lucas covered the remaining distance on the next play for his second touchdown of the night. ... DT John Hummell added two points for East Lake one play later when he corralled Williams in the end zone for a safety. ... After McDuffy's efforts to end the first half, Josh Bowers ran through Clearwater with the second half kickoff, rambling 99 yards to the end zone to put East Lake up 26-7. ... Finally, Eagles coach Bob Hudson continued his tradition of rewarding his senior linemen when a trick play allowed Joe Allaster to throw a fourth quarter 30-yard touchdown pass to Judah Norwood.Key players: East Lake was led by Breon Hillman (77 yards on 20 carries), Lucas (40 yards on eight carries) and QB Jackson Rowland (9 of 11, 72 yards). Joshua Green added an interception in the victory. ... For Clearwater, Williams was held to 36 yards on 13 carries. Wray threw for 98 yards and TD passes to Murray (five receptions, 87 yards) and Brannan Demeter (three receptions, 42 yards) before leaving after re-injuring his left knee late in the third quarter. Rent Montie came in and connected with Demeter for the last Tornadoes TD. Final word I: "I enjoyed my role in the offense (Friday).
