TARPON SPRINGS — In what was supposed to be a tightly contested game for the Class 5A, District 9 championship, Lakewood ended up running away with the district crown with ease. Spartans QB Gregory Spann II passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, as Lakewood cruised to a 36-14 victory over Tarpon Springs (6-2, 2-1) Friday night.
Key drive: Lakewood's opening possession was the one that helped set the tone for the rest of the night. Spann's 28-yard touchdown run put the Spartans up 7-0 with 9:39 left in the first quarter and Lakewood (6-1, 3-0) never trailed at any point during the game.
Stars of the game: Spann completed 10-of-15 passes for 123 yards and two scores. He used his legs as well, rushing for 61 yards on 12 attempts. … Tarpon Springs QB Justice Parham stepped in and played well despite starting the game at wide receiver. Parham was 7-of-14 for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Key stat: Lakewood had four offensive plays of 20-plus yards compared to Tarpon Springs' one.
