SEMINOLE — Playing for the second time in four days, St Petersburg (6-3, 1-3) took care of business against Seminole (2-7, 1-3) Monday night in Class 7A, District 10 action. After allowing the Warhawks to score the game's first touchdown, St. Petesburg stormed back with 34 unanswered points en route to a 34-14 victory.
Key drive: Ahead by six points late in the second quarter, St. Petersburg effectively used the two-minute drill to increase its lead before the half. With 33 seconds left on the clock, quarterback Tonio Shavers connected with Anthony Johnson for a 32-yard touchdown.
Key plays: For Seminole, defensive back Dillon Twiss intercepted Shavers on his second pass attempt of the night, returning the ball 56 yards for a touchdown. The Green Devils quickly went to a run-heavy style of offense, and did so effectively. The duo of Derrel Kelly and Deshawn Brown rushed for 83 yards after just 10 carries. And although they saw limited action in the second half, collectively, they ran for 105 yards with Kelly adding a touchdown. Shavers atoned for his early mistake by finishing the game with 201 yards passing and three touchdowns. Six of his nine completions went for 20-plus yards. Senior wide receivers Johnson, and Deterryon Anderson (two touchdowns) were too big for the Warhawks' secondary. On multiple occasions, Shavers was able to pick up big chunks of yards by simply throwing the ball down-field to the Green Devils' duo.
Key stats: Offensively, the Warhawks were led by quarterback Tony Tonova, wide receiver Kameron Green, and running back Jarrod Briscoe. The trio totaled 173 yards rushing on 28 carries. Green was responsible for the Warhawks' only offensive score of the night.
