KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Angels LHP C.J. Wilson will have season-ending surgery to remove bone spurs in his ailing left elbow, a significant blow to one of the Rays' main challengers in the battle for a wild-card spot.Wilson went on the disabled list July 31 after experiencing elbow pain. He recently got a second opinion on his elbow, and decided that surgery would be the best course of action. Wilson hopes to be ready by spring training.Wilson was 8-8 with a 3.89 ERA in 21 starts. The two-time All-Star is in the fourth year of a five-year, $77.5 million deal. Wilson is due to make $20 million in the final season.Wilson has dealt with bone spurs for much of his career, and had similar procedures to clean out his elbow in 2008 and 2012. He bounced back successfully on both occasions. CUBS: Jon Lester recorded his fourth double-digit strikeout game of the season and 24th of his career, getting 10 against the Brewers on Thursday. He's the first lefty in Cubs history with four double-digit strikeout games in a year. INDIANS: The twin 4-year-old daughters of INF Mike Aviles threw out the ceremonial first pitches Thursday night. Adriana Aviles was diagnosed with leukemia in May and has been undergoing treatment at Cleveland Clinic. She was joined on the field by sister Maiya . Aviles, who has been placed on the family medical emergency list twice to spend time with his family, caught the pitches. RANGERS: OF Josh Hamilton did not start for the second consecutive game because of left knee soreness. With his former team, the Rays, visiting tonight, he'll see team physician Keith Meister and have an MRI scan. ROYALS: OF Alex Gordon hopes to begin a rehab assignment in the next couple weeks and potentially rejoin the team near the end of the season. Gordon has been on the disabled list since July 9 with a severely strained left groin sustained chasing a fly ball against the Rays at Tropicana Field. He has been taking regular batting practice and this week shagged fly balls. TWINS: RHP Phil Hughes will be put on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, due to lower back inflammation. LHP Tommy Milone 's bullpen session went well Thursday, clearing him for reinstatement from the DL (strained left elbow) Sunday to start against the Indians. Rookie RHP Tyler Duffey will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester and start Saturday against the Indians. YANKEES: 1B Greg Bird was called up from Triple A and made his major-league debut while Mark Teixeira got a day off.
