Captain's Corner: Snook fishing has been strong

This year continues to bring challenges for the bay area's guide business. What most don't realize is how good fishing is inside Tampa Bay. Most of the bay it is free of Red Tide and full of marine life. In fact, I have notice that the clean areas are holding more fish than normal. Snook fishing has been great as fish move onto the flats with every cold front as they get ready for winter. They eventually will move into the rivers and residential canals. Redfish schools also have been hanging around and as the new and full moon phases near, they will be ready to cooperate. The key with redfish is to be ready when the school comes down the flat. The bait of choice has been pinfish or cut bait. Trout fishing is picking up with every cooler day we have. Look for the flats around the Cockroach Bay area to pick up, and you should start seeing those big females on the shallows in the sun. You can't go wrong with a frisky greenback under a popping cork when targeting trout. Bait is starting to show on the markers inside the bay, but you should still be able to find it on the flats this month.
