Marc Topkin’s takeaways from Rays 3-2 and 8-2 losses to Royals in DH sweep:
* Blake Snell insists he is fine, that the broken right fourth toe isn’t causing him any pain, altering his delivery or limiting him in any way to make pitches. Nor that the 10-day stint on the injured list is contributing to his lack of command. But until he looks like himself again with a sharp outing, those questions will linger.
* Lost in the ruins of the doubleheader sweep, Kevin Kiermaier made a clever play in the first inning of the opener. He acted like he would catch Hunter Dozier’s drive that actually hit off the wall for a double, and the deke was good enough to keep Alex Gordon, temporarily, from scoring.
* It’s way too early to consider any game singularly important. But after Wednesday’s mess, some Rays said they consider Thursday a must win. There’s some value to that psyche-wise, for sure. But also this: To be good you have to beat the bad teams, and the Rays are 3-3 against the quite bad Royals.
