ST. PETERSBURG — With Friday’s win snapping their latest mini-skid and putting the Rays back alone in first place in the AL East, they feel pretty good about what’s ahead this season, on a pace for 99 wins and a return to the playoffs.
They measure up pretty well to this point, and looking back, too. Knowing there is so much we don’t know about how the rest of this season plays out, here’s a question:
Could this be the best team the Rays have ever had?
Here’s a quick comparison to the 2008 and 2010 AL East championship teams, with totals and AL rank where applicable, and 2019 with full-season projections, through Friday:

Short stops
• The uptick in attendance last week showed a few things: price does matter, which the Rays should note; the supposedly torturous trip to the hinterlands of downtown St. Petersburg on weekday nights actually is navigable when folks want it to be; and while the crowds were better, the number of discounted and free tickets was significant. Averaging 16,412 for the first five games of the homestand was better but hardly worth celebrating or viewing as a solution.
• With the Rays expected, in the words of one team official, to be “in on everybody” leading to the trade deadline, a guiding theme in acquisitions should be “been there, done that.’’ Of the current players, only a handful have been on playoff teams. A reliever, or two, seems the top need, though an impact player, such as Cleveland shortstop Francisco Lindor, would be intriguing.
• The Rays are being properly respectful of relievers Jose Alvarado’s privacy in not disclosing the reason for his extended absence, beyond acknowledging that he went home to Venezuela to deal with an issue that initially fell under the family medical emergency list. But when Alvarado, who left the team June 2 and was shifted to the unpaid restricted list on June 9, returns, he would seem to owe some kind of a public explanation.
