Marc Topkin’s takeaways from Rays 5-4 Monday win over Yankees:

* Blake Snell pitched much more like he had been recently than he typically does at Yankee Stadium, which was good for the Rays. Holding the Yankees to one run over five innings was solid, but pitching himself out of the game with 93 pitches not so much.

* The Rays can say whatever they want about circumstances, unlucky breaks or whatever, but they need major work on their baserunning and bad decision making. It’s been a season-long issue and surfaced again Monday with two runners thrown out and a third saved by a replay review. Manager Kevin Cash used the word “atrocious" when asked about it postgame.

* Manager Kevin Cash ultimately takes the heat when his bullpen moves don’t work out, but sometimes it’s hard to blame him. Monday he took a risk to get five outs from Diego Castillo (who looked better than he had) only to see the more reliable Emilio Pagan come in and allow a homer.
