UPDATE, 5:25: Cash said it’s too early to set a timetable for Diaz’s return as he is still in considerable pain but given that x-rays showed no fracture that would expect it to be "sooner than later.'' ... One of the reasons Gibaut was DFA’d was that the Rays had already fielded some trade interest in him and expect to deal him during the next five days, so in essence getting something back when they had to give someone up. Also, apparently, that Jose De Leon, Jake Faria and Austin Pruitt all factored more into their immediate plans. ... Brandon Lowe was in a walking boot and won’t do any baseball activities for 2-3 days after receiving a cortisone injection today to try to reduce the pain he has been feeling in his severely bruised right let. Lowe said it was “not a setback” or a big deal and was "a stability thing.''

UPDATE, 3:18: Diaz was placed on the 10-day injured list with a bruised left foot that has him on crutches and, he said, still in a lot of pain. Diaz said he didn’t know yet how long he would out, having to leave Monday’s game in the ninth inning when he fouled a ball off the inside of his left foot. The Rays activated Matt Duffy off the 60-injured list to take Diaz’s spot in making his season debut after a lengthy hamstring injury. And to make room on the 40-man roster, the Rays designated for assignment reliever Ian Gibaut, who made his major-league debut earlier this month. The Rays have seven days to trade, release or pass Gibaut through waivers. Also of note, Brandon Lowe had a walking boot on his bruised right foot.

DEVELOPING: The Rays are awaiting word on the status of corner infielder Yandy Diaz, who left Monday’s game after fouling a ball off his left foot with two outs in the ninth inning of their 9-4 loss to the Red Sox.

Diaz was down for a while and in obvious discomfort when he was helped up and off the field after being hit in the instep area. He was headed for an x-ray and a doctor visit after the game.

"He was in a lot of pain,'' manager Kevin Cash said.

The injury comes as the Rays were set to activate corner infielder Matt Duffy from the injured list for his season debut. They seemed to be planning to drop a pitcher to make room for Duffy, though Diaz’s status could impact that, obviously if he is headed to the injured list for what would be the third time this season.

"The last at-bat kind of summed up the night. That’s kind of how I felt about it. Unfortunately Yandy took one,'' Cash said. "We’re having some bad luck. Got to make it change a little bit.''

The Rays also need to make space on the 40-man roster for Duffy, since he has been on the 60-day injured list.
