ST. PETERSBURG — Rays All-Star infielder Brandon Lowe was reinstated from the injured list today and placed in the lineup against the Red Sox at Tropicana Field.
To make room for Lowe on the 40-man roster, infielder/outfielder Kean Wong was designated for assignment.
Lowe, who led the Rays with 16 home runs and 49 RBIs at the time of his shin injury on July 2, suffered a setback in an Aug. 21 rehabilitation game (left quadriceps strain), pushing back his return to the regular season’s final week.
“We all know what Brandon did for us and has done,’’ Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “He has worked had to get back, probably as quick as he could.
“In fairness to him, he’s not going to be a burner on the bases. We’ve asked him to do everything he can to manage kind of a controlled run. We’ll pinch-run for him in a big spot. Certainly, it’s nice to have him back.’’
Lowe said he was eager to contribute.
“It’s nice walking in this clubhouse, knowing you have a chance to play instead of rehabbing,’’ Lowe said. “I have been looking forward to this.’’
