Rays get Esteban Quiroz to complete deal with Padres

The Mexican League veteran is the player to be named, finalizing the December trade headlined by Tommy Pham going west.

ST. PETERSBURG — The player to be named to complete the Rays’ December trade with the Padres is Esteban Quiroz.

The 28-year-old infielder joins outfielder Hunter Renfroe and infield prospect Xavier Edwards as the return the Rays got for sending outfielder Tommy Pham and infielder Jake Cronenworth west.

Quiroz, a lefty swinger, hit .271 with 19 homers with 66 RBIs and a .923 OPS in 96 games last season for Triple-A El Paso. He is a veteran of seven seasons in the Mexican League, signing with the Red Sox in November 2017, then being traded to the Padres in November 2018.

He was ranked the Padres’ No. 23 prospect by mlbpipeline.com and looks to provide depth at Triple-A Durham with the potential to help in the big leagues. He played primarily shortstop last season, but also has experience at shortstop, third base and all three outfield spots.
