Rays minor-league staff has different look

The Rays will have three minor-league managers and a dozen coaches in different places this season. There also will be one new face, as Ronnie Richardson, a former assistant coach at Hillsborough Community College, joins the staff.

Many of the changes are a result of the Major League Baseball-led consolidation and reorganization of the minor leagues, with teams limited to four full-season affiliates and based at their complexes for rookie-level play.

The Rays no longer have a short-season Class A affiliate in Hudson Valley, N.Y., nor a rookie-level affiliate in Princeton, W.Va. Additionally, they switched one of their Class A affiliations from Port Charlotte to Charleston, S.C.

Under the MLB plan, the team in Bowling Green, Ky., was moved up to High A status and Charleston is the Low A team. The Rays kept their top two affiliates in place, with the Triple-A team in Durham, N.C., and the Double-A club in Montgomery, Ala.

Under the new managerial plan, Jeff Smith switched from Charlotte to Bowling Green, Blake Butera from Bowling Green to Charleston, and Rafael Valenzuela from Hudson Valley to the complex-based Gulf Coast League team. Morgan Ensberg returns to manage at Montgomery and Brady Williams at Durham. Additional coaches were added at several levels.
