Rays left-handed starter Ryan Yarbrough won’t have to face Baltimore All-Star centerfielder Cedric Mullins when Tampa Bay opens its three-game set against the struggling Orioles tonight at Tropicana Field.

Manager Brandon Hyde said he simply was giving Mullins the night off in an attempt to keep him fresh. Mullins, who started for the American League in last Tuesday’s All-Star game, leads the Orioles in average (.313) and is tied for the team lead with 16 home runs, but is batting .167 (3-for-18) in five games against the Rays.

Cancer conqueror Trey Mancini, a far sharper thorn in the Rays’ collective side (four home runs, nine RBIs in six games vs. Tampa Bay this season) will bat second as the designated hitter for the Orioles.
