ST. PETERSBURG — In an effort to give their starters an extra day’s rest during the current merciless stretch, the Rays have called up right-hander Luis Patino from Triple-A Durham to start tonight’s series opener against the Royals.

Then in all likelihood, they’ll send him right back down. One effective spot start, however, could prove invaluable for a club playing 17 games in as many days.

Elsewhere, Wander Franco sat out for Triple-A Durham for the straight consecutive day in its series at Norfolk (Va.) after soreness to his surgically mended right hand forced him out of Tuesday’s contest.

Meantime, outfielder Manuel Margot went 2-for-5 with an RBI and pair of singles in his seventh rehab game for Durham. Out since late June with a patellar tendon strain in his right knee, Margot is slated to rejoin the Rays on Saturday, the first day he’s eligible to be reinstated from the 60-day disabled list.

To make room for Patino, the Rays designated right-hander Jimmy Yacabonis for assignment. Here is the Tampa Bay lineup for this evening:

3B Yandy Diaz

2B Brandon Lowe

LF Randy Arozarena

DH David Peralta

SS Taylor Walls

1B Ji-Man Choi

C Christian Bethancourt

RF Roman Quinn

CF Jose Siri

And the lineup for the Royals, who are mired in a 26-inning scoreless streak:
